Some
exciting outreach opportunities...
Two-Coins a Meal
In 1989 the Presbytery of
Lake Huron established a partnership with the FIEC (now IEPC) churches in
Costa Rica. Hunger among those in the IEPC communities was early recognized
as a growing problem especially among the children who make up more than 30%
of the population.
Ever
since the churches of the presbytery began to
participate in the Two Coins a Meal offering, we have
dedicated half of the offering to help alleviate hunger
in the IEPC communities. The remaining 50% of the
offering supports hunger programs chosen by each local
church (25%) and Lake Huron Presbytery (25%). Currently
more than 300 children in the IEPC communities depend
upon meals provided by a feeding program that is
supported through our Two Coins a Meal offering. This is
only a small fraction of the hungry children in these
impoverished neighborhoods. An offering of 35 cents per
day will provide 2 meals a week for a year for a hungry
child in Costa Rica.
In
addition to the offerings gathered in our churches, Two
Coins a Meal offerings are collected at the meals that
take place during presbytery meetings. Over the last 16
years, our Two Coins a Meal offering has resulted in
$138,194 in support of IEPC and an equal amount shared
between local church and Presbytery hunger ministries.
The
Presbyterian Coffee Project

The
Presbyterian Coffee Project is a way to help people in
need while enjoying fellowship and an excellent cup of
coffee. Presbyterian congregations that participate are
supporting fair trade-practices which compliment our
mission with farmers in Latin America, Africa and Asia,
as well as our commitment to stewardship of the natural
environment.
Purchase of this coffee ensures a fair price to the
farmers as many struggle for basic subsistence. Please
join us at Fellowship Hour each Sunday for an
opportunity to sample this coffee, purchase fairly
traded coffee and tea and learn more about the Coffee
Project and Fair Trade. Regular coffees include: Organic
Ethiopian, Cafe' Salvador, and Cafe' Nicaragua.
Decaffeinated flavor is Organic Columbian. Flavored
coffees include Hazelnut, French Vanilla and Toffee
Caramel.
2005
IEPC Mission Work Tour to Costa Rica
The
Presbytery of Lake Huron sponsored a two-week
Mission/Work trip to the IEPC (previously FIEC) churches
in Costa Rica this last summer. The trip was from July 8
to 22 and and cost participants $900. Over 100 participants on
prior trips have found the trips highly rewarding in may
way. See Heidi Zwyghuizen or Norma Richardson for
reflections on their experience. |
